New Clinical Guidelines on Cancer in Pregnancy: What You Need to Know

Major medical organizations have recently published updated guidelines on diagnosing and treating cancer during pregnancy — a significant milestone that reflects decades of dedicated research, including the work of the Cancer and Pregnancy Registry.

These guidelines provide oncologists, obstetricians, and maternal-fetal medicine specialists with evidence-based recommendations to help navigate one of medicine’s most complex clinical challenges: caring for both mother and baby when cancer strikes during pregnancy.

ASCO Guideline: Management of Cancer During Pregnancy (2025)

The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) published a comprehensive guideline on the management of cancer during pregnancy, authored by Loren et al. This landmark document covers diagnosis, staging, treatment decision-making, and delivery planning across multiple cancer types. It represents one of the most thorough evidence-based frameworks available to oncologists treating pregnant patients.

ESGO Guidelines: Gynecologic Cancers in Pregnancy

The European Society of Gynaecological Oncology (ESGO) has released updated guidelines addressing gynecologic cancers diagnosed during pregnancy. These guidelines offer detailed recommendations specific to cervical, ovarian, and other gynecologic malignancies — conditions that require careful coordination between oncologic treatment and obstetric management.

SMFM Consult Series #76: Cancer in Pregnancy (2026)

The Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM) published Consult Series #76, focused specifically on cancer in pregnancy from the maternal-fetal medicine perspective. This resource is especially valuable for MFM specialists and obstetricians managing the pregnancy alongside cancer treatment, offering guidance on monitoring, timing of delivery, and fetal considerations.

The publication of guidelines from ASCO, ESGO, and SMFM in such close succession signals how far the field has come — and how urgently clinicians need clear, standardized recommendations. The Cancer and Pregnancy Registry has contributed data to this growing body of evidence for over two decades, and we are proud to see that work reflected in these resources.

If you or a patient has been diagnosed with cancer during pregnancy, we encourage you to share these guidelines with your care team. For questions or to enroll in the Registry, please call 856-757-7876.
